Default Greeters at Tankwa - Who and What?

Hi All. We're revamping and re-energising the Greeter role this year. I want all you larger than life greeters to be part of the Tankwa Greeter Posse.

I'm making Lanyards with a cheat sheet for each greeter. I'm also making posters with the things to tell people.

Often in our flurry of greeting and welcoming people we forget to tell them some important stuffs. So this year we'll all have reminders ... phew

If you want to be a greeter - we need Wednesday, Thursday and Friday greeters the most. All day and all night. If you're a night owl and want to own your little space in Entrance Tankwa, please give me a shout.

ALSO>>>>> PLease let me know your thoughts for what SHOULD be told to people at the Greeters station. Taking into Account we will be doing NO TICKETING at the Greeter station, just information and a fun welcome.

    1. MOOP - what is it and what we think of it - this includes the no feathers and glitter discussion as well as the Take it With you discussion
    2. How the camp is laid out and where stuffs are
    3. TOILETS - what to know and do
    4. ...
    ....
    10. Have FUN and Radical Self Expression

    Please post ideas and suggestions

    Volunteer brief

    Greeters at AfrikaBurn 2011

Greeters are the fun loving people who tear off the ticket stubs, assist virgins (first timers to the event) gong the gong and make everyone feel welcome after their long trip to Tankwa. Greeters also assist burners with orientation and guide them to where to camp. The Greeters are there, equipped with the answers to the many questions being asked. They impart some of the principles of the event and generally put the burners at ease just before they enter the Binnekering of Tankwa Town and AfrikaBurn.
Bring music, dress up, dress down, choreograph a little welcome dance and be the welcoming committee with infectious exuberance, that heightens the excitement at the very last stop before entering AfrikaBurn.

Greeting is a 3 hour Shifts. Ideally there are two or more Greeters per Shift. Its a great group activity and works well with a group of friends.

The Role of greeters is to greet the people at the greeters station who have just come from the gate.
The Greeter mission is to enthusiastically welcome each participant (first time or experienced) home, ensure that they are educated and prepared, orient them, answer their questions, and set the vibe for their amazing experience at AfrikaBurn.

Greeters must also very importantly tear off ticket stubs and place them is the right containers.

Greeters will have the layout document and a detailed map to explain to Burners their orientation on the map. Greeters explain where the quiet-ish zones and the noisy-ish zones are and generally answer questions to new arrivals! Greeters will have one radio and can call for assistance should the need arise!

The Greeter mission is to enthusiastically welcome each participant (first time or experienced) home, ensure that they are educated and prepared, orient them, answer their questions, and set the vibe for their amazing experience at AfrikaBurn. As a greeter you are the person responsible for not only welcoming participants to the gathering but also helping them with camp info and sending them off in the right direction. Its possibly one of the funnest jobs to do at AfrikaBurn. Each shift requires 2 persons BUT more are welcome. The shift schedule will be posted at The volunteer Booth/information This is a 3 hour shift. You will receive training and information at the start of your shifts.

    Arrival time\Preparedness for your shift
    • Arrive 15 minutes before the start of your shift
    • Be well-rested and sober enough to greet
    • Check in with Gate and Shift Leader
    • Make sure that you have read the material that you are handing out
    • Be prepared to stay 10 minutes late for hand over to the new shift

What to Bring --- Make sure you bring the following to each shift
    • Water\water vessel
    • A Snack - three hours is a long time to go without food
    • Weather protection (sun\wind\rain\dust\cold)
    • Adequate clothing
    • and a fenominal attitude of welcomeness!

    On Shift
    • Have fun!!! Maintain excitement and exuberance
    • Be considerate and clear
    • Be aware of what is going on around you
    • Be a role model --- remember, leave no trace
    • Recruit new greeters as you work
    • Do not overexert yourself.
    • Make eye contact with each individual in the vehicle
    • Alter your spiel according to burner experience
    • If the arrival is a virgin - make sure they know the basics\old problems
    • If the arrival is experienced - new policies\old problems
    • When slammed, stop ringing the bell

    Greeting and Assessing Fellow Burners
    1. Say hello - welcome home - give the participants the collated materials
    2. Ask if the participant is with a registered theme camp. If they are, encourage them to go to the Volunteer Booth to sign up for a volunteer shift. Promote volunteering - its what you are doing, it adds enormous value to the whole experience and the event itself and the event depends on it!!
    3. Engage with the participant on where they want to camp. If they have not been to AB before emphasis a safe and well secured camp. Emphasis slow and careful driving in Tankwa Town to their camp- especially at night!
    4. Remind them that it is a no driving event and once they have found where they are going to camp they must park their cars and put away their keys (no exceptions except registered art cars.
    5. If they arrive in a weird bus or a fabulously flagged mutant vehicle or anything in between inform them that they have to go tot eh Department of Mutant vehicles to license their art car and register it, meter maids will be waiting!!

Thank you for volunteering and welcoming Burners, virgin or not, to AfrikaBurn. The event would not happen without you. Please feel free to give us feedback at the booth
We hope you will return for greeting next year.
