Hi all you Burners out there, particularly you Virgins.
If you have tickets you have chosen to participate in the most rewarding experience of your lives.
The ticketing has created a great furor this year and has been exacerbated by the limiting of tickets. There is a reason for limiting of tickets.
Afrikaburn has experienced an runaway growth in the last 2 years that can threaten the very culture it aims to promote. The 10 principle are what cradle the community and its ideals. It is imperative that the culture of the Burner community remains. Sacrosanct to this event among other principles is PARTICIPATION.
I have read many threads re ticketing so far and so many comment on the Bang for the Buck.
But no one is really commenting on where the BANG comes from. The BANG comes from each participant getting their hands dirty and PARTICIPATING.
PARTICIPATING is tied into so many of the other principles, but the joy of Afrikaburn is created from this very notion. What do we mean by PARTICIPATING.
You can participate on every level you can imagine - be it gifting drinks, sushi on day 4 to participants walking past your camp, creating an art sculpture (you don't need funding or permission to do this, often the surprises are the most exciting)
or creating a Theme Camp offering all kinds of whimsical experiences.
Even though there are party and musical Theme Camps. Afrikaburn is not all about the party even though they are most welcome. It is about the CREATIVITY in all its forms. This is what makes it special.
Now most of you say I don't have the capacity or am not organized enough to do anything significant this year, but all the small things gifted also count, but there is something every newbie virgin burner and veteran burner alike can do and that is VOLUNTEER.
And this is why the tickets have been limited this year.
VOLUNTEERISM percentages are not in line with the number of attendees and creates immense strain on the few that have. The capacity to deal with all the logistics , community programs, manning of departments are strained and the culture of what has become affectionately called Tourists can grow which is counter to all that is trying to be achieved.
REMEMBER Afrikaburn is a VOLUNTEER driven event - in order to stop capping of numbers next year we have to see a rise in VOLUNTEERism.
By VOLUNTEERing you can sign up to a multitude of functions from joining the Tankwa Town Rangers, an exceptional way to meet all the good people of Tankwa Town. When I rangered a few years back I was treated to a hearty breakfast at one camp, and a fabulous lunch at another, all the while joining in a few activities as we patrolled around the Binnekring. You can VOLUNTEER to become a Greeter - be the first person to welcome Burners back HOME in your most creative heartwarming and creative way. Get Virgins to ring the Virgin Bell. You can Volunteer to man the Volunteer booth.
You can volunteer in a co-originating role in managing volunteers on site.
REMEMBER this when you VOLUNTEER, and you commit to a time, you need to show up and perform what you promised. There is nothing worse and puts more strain on the organization of VOLUNTEERS than one of us not arriving for duty.
Don't think of it as a Duty- it will more than that, your shift, volunteering, will be most likely be one of the fondest memories you will have at Afrikaburn this year.
If you want to stop the capping of numbers - VOLUNTEER and show up for your shift this year at Afrikaburn.
Follow this link on the Afrikaburn website to do the right thing and make our community in the Tankwa the most interactive quizzical community on the planet. THIS IS WHERE THE BANG for you BUCK is gained.
