We are The No Spectator

We're not a theme camp, we aren't a performance and we're not a mutant vehicle - we are The No Spectator, an AfrikaBurn community newspaper.

The No Spectator is an experiment in extreme publishing. Created by and for the AfrikaBurn community, it is a volunteer publication always looking for your content. It's your AfrikaBurn and it's your newspaper - so get creative and get involved!

Initiated in early 2011, the idea was basic: to produce a daily newspaper at AfrikaBurn. This grew into the production of off-Tankwa editions which are distributed at year-round AfrikaBurn fundraisers, initiatives and related events.

The creation of this renegade rag was achieved through a meandering crash course in printing, resulting in the final document being created using:

- a Mac to create the masthead, frames and place the images, using InDesign and Photoshop
- a laser printer to print the masters
- a one-pass Risograph to scan the masters and print each composite page (off-Tankwa editions are completed at this stage, on-Tankwa go on to the next stage)
- a Sperry Remington Tenfifty typewriter to type up a copy of daily news, schedules, interviews etc onto hectograph paper
- a Rex Rotary R11 spirit duplicator, to transfer copy (in purple ink) to the Riso-printed composite pages on site

Once an edition is printed our trusty corps of volunteers then

The reason that this process is used was to create a document which had all the characteristics of a real paper, under the circumstances. Thus printing it on newsprint, which was able to pass through both the Riso and the Rex Rotary. During the course of the year out-of-event editions are printed using the Risograph.

The No Spectator rolls off the press daily at AfrikaBurn, and is published during the year to coincide with major AfrikaBurn-related events.
