If it makes noise, move to it!

In the spirit of self-expression, there is every kind of music at AfrikaBurn. Some of it is soft and dainty, intimate or delicate. Some of it is not, and is loud, large and can go on for a long time. Anything goes, but if you’re not making a positive contribution, your fellow citizens will let you know about it. This speaks directly to the issue of Sound Out Of Place. If you’re banging 140bpm on a big system at 6am, there had better be a big crowd. If you plan to perform or bring a sound system, consult with the relevant AfrikaBurn co-ordinator.

THINGS TO CONSIDER

We do not determine what is going to be played - you do! And no one genre of music dominates this festival. We also don’t determine how it is going to be played.

One of the core principles of AfrikaBurn is that of radical self-reliance, this means that unlike other events we are not providing large array of stages with a tight line-up of DJs and live performers with which to entertain you (just as we are not designing what art works occur at AfrikaBurn). This is not a centrally organized rock concert or nightclub - we urge you to try and hook up with other musicians to share equipment. Join up with people who are organizing a theme camp to provide a vibe, add music to other installations. Make a sound installation.

If you have an idea, you do not need approval from the AfrikaBurn crew to go ahead with it, just go ahead. We have a few rules (safety and respect of others), but not a lot. And yes we would love hear about your intended project, try and help if we can, and post it on the website if you wouldn’t mind. But by all means go forth and continue to organise.

Don’t wait for us, make it happen!
