In the spirit of participation, AfrikaBurn encourages volunteers to step up and get involved. It’s a great way to participate in the community, and can consist of as much or as little time spent on the many tasks that bring Tankwa Town together; it’s up to you.
You can volunteer for anything – for more than one department or portfolio, and it doesn’t matter if you haven’t attended any pre-production meetings. The key thing is to do what you’re good at, or would like to learn more about. But remember this: whatever you sign up for, do it. There’s lots to see and do at AfrikaBurn – if you sign up for a shift, be there and get cracking. So, what can you volunteer for?
Department of Public Works (DPW)
The DPW are responsible for creating the key infrastructure of the event: roads, signage, toilets and much more. Like getting your hands dirty? Step right this way, your skills will be put to good use working with the DPW.
Art Installations
The large art structures erected at AfrikaBurn need many hands to bring them t life. Good with power tools, wood, metal or electricity? This one’s for you.
Gate Duty and Greeters
Bubbly? Enthusiastic? Fancy welcoming the citizens of Tankwa Town with a smile, song or dance? Perfect. Dress up or dress down, and get to orientate and inform people as they arrive.
Rangering
Rangers not the police or security, but rather there to make sure everyone has a good time and doesn’t get hurt. They’re active participants in the community, who promote awareness of potential hazards. If you have disaster management training, are trained in fighting fires or have medical experience, you’re Ranger material. But bear in mind you must be calm, flexible and have a sense of humour.
Matter Out Of Place (MOOP)
The Tankwa Karoo is a pristine environment, but all the stuff that hits the ground has to be removed, and despite the fact that AfrikaBurn is a Leave No Trace event, some people don’t read - or sometimes forget - the manual. Which is when MOOP happens. Got some karma to work off? Course you do. Step up and be counted, your MOOP Patrol awaits!
